El Peñón's shore access from Tabaiba keeps logistics simple, while the wreck itself rewards divers with real structure to explore: winches, bollards and the propeller are still clearly recognisable after decades underwater. What makes it special is how alive it has become. What began as a sunken tugboat is now a dense, thriving reef, and that transformation is exactly the kind of story that makes wreck diving in Tenerife so compelling. El Peñón is Tenerife's most iconic wreck dive, a sunken tugboat resting just off the coastal village of Tabaiba on the island's north-east coast. Intentionally sunk in 2006 to create an artificial reef, it has grown into one of the most rewarding shore dives in the Canary Islands. The wreck sits with its bow raised at around 20 metres and slopes down to 32 metres on its far side, giving divers of different experience levels a reason to return: shallower sections near the top, and the full structure, including swim-throughs into the bridge and engine room, for those trained and equipped to go deeper. THE STORY ## The story of El Peñón Built in Sevilla in 1958 as the tugboat Cepsa Segundo, this vessel served the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for decades, surviving an accidental sinking in 1971 before being refloated and returned to service as R. Peñón. Damselfish, Bream & Sardines YEAR-ROUND Gather densely around the hull, giving the wreck its characteristic sense of life and movement. Octopus & Moray Eels YEAR-ROUND Frequently found tucked into the wreck's nooks and crannies, along with the occasional cuttlefish. Stingrays & Angel Sharks YEAR-ROUND Occasional sightings on the sandy seabed around the wreck; always worth a careful look before moving on. CONDITIONS & SUITABILITY Visibility Often exceeds 20 metres. Current Usually mild; the site is sheltered from strong currents. Temperature Approx. 19°C in winter to 24°C in summer. Best season Year-round. Exposure protection 5 mm is comfortable for most divers; some prefer 7 mm in winter. PERFECT FOR Advanced Open Water divers, wreck diving enthusiasts, and divers who want a rewarding shore dive without a boat. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR Newly certified Open Water divers: the wreck's lower sections reach 32 metres, beyond the standard Open Water depth limit. 💡 BARBARIAN INSTRUCTOR TIP Take your time on the approach: the upper sections around 18-20 metres are calmer and easier to control your buoyancy, which sets you up well before heading deeper into the wreck's interior. ## Frequently asked questions How deep is the El Peñón wreck? El Peñón rests at a depth of 20 to 32 metres, with the bow slightly raised. Do I need a special certification to dive El Peñón? This is an advanced-level dive due to the depth. An Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, plus some logged dives, is recommended. Can I go inside the wreck? Trained divers can access swim-throughs including the bridge, deck cabins and engine room. Wreck penetration training is recommended for the deeper interior sections. What will I see at El Peñón?
