Why We Love Las Eras

Very few sites in Tenerife genuinely suit both a first open-water dive and an experienced diver chasing depth, but Las Eras manages it. The shallow reef alone is rewarding, and the tunnel-and-wall route beyond it gives more experienced divers a real reason to go back.

It is also a site with a bit of personality: tucked into a shelf on the wall is a small Buddha statue, the kind of detail that turns a great dive into a memorable one.

Las Eras is a small, quiet village on Tenerife south coast, and its dive site is known for offering something genuinely different depending on how deep you want to go. Entry is from a sheltered bay, keeping the approach calm and straightforward even when there is some swell running outside.

Just outside the bay, a reef sits in as little as 5 to 14 metres, already busy with marine life. Divers who want to go further can follow a tunnel system starting around 12 metres, working through swim-throughs and caves before reaching a steep wall that drops past 30 metres.

UNDERWATER LANDSCAPE

The shallow reef just outside the bay is where most of the dive marine life concentrates, with plenty to see even without going deep. From around 12 metres, a tunnel leads through the rock for some distance before opening into caves and swim-throughs.

Divers continuing further reach a steep wall dropping well past 30 metres, one of the more dramatic pieces of underwater terrain on this stretch of coast, and the point where rays and occasional angel sharks are most often seen.

Exposure protection

5 mm is comfortable for most divers; some prefer 7 mm in winter, especially for the deeper wall.

PERFECT FOR

Open Water divers on the shallow reef, and Advanced or Deep-certified divers looking to explore the tunnel system and wall down to 35 metres.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR

The deep wall option (30-35 metres) requires an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent; newly certified divers should stick to the shallow reef.
