Why We Love Playa San Juan

Few sites make ray-spotting this easy. Between the roughtail stingray, the eagle ray and several other species that pass over the sandy bottom, Playa San Juan consistently delivers one of the most reliable ray encounters in Tenerife.

It's also simply a pleasant, relaxed dive: good visibility, plenty of light, no meaningful current, and rock formations interesting enough to explore without ever feeling demanding.

Playa San Juan is a small fishing village on Tenerife's west coast, away from the busier tourist areas, and its dive site matches that relaxed character: an easy sandy beach entry into shallow, well-lit water.

Depths range from just 3 to 18 metres, with an entertaining rock formation at around 16-18 metres for those who want a little more depth. The real draw, though, is what swims over the sand: on a good day it's possible to see up to five different ray species on a single dive.

UNDERWATER LANDSCAPE

The site is mostly a gently sloping sandy bottom, easy to navigate and comfortable for divers of any experience level.

At around 16 to 18 metres, an entertaining rock formation breaks up the sand, giving more experienced divers or those looking for a bit more structure something to explore.

BARBARIAN INSTRUCTOR TIP

Keep low and scan the sand ahead rather than around you: rays often rest partially buried, and a slow approach gives you the best chance of a close, calm encounter.
